GREAT BARRIER REEF MARINE NATIONAL PARK 


The Great Barrier Reef Marine National park protects a large part of Australia's  Great Barrier Reef  from damaging activities


 LOCATION - Queensland in the waterway of th northeastern  coast of Australia

BOUNDARIES - Encompass an area of 132,806 square miles (343966sqkm)
 
EASTABLISHED - 1975

MANAGING  AUTHORITIES - Great Barrier Reef Marine Park  Authority; Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service ; Queensland Fisheries


GREAT  BARRIER REEF :-

 BOUNDARIES  - 14000 miles (2300 km) with over 2900 individual reefs  creating the largest coral reef system in the world .that accounts  for approx 10% of the world coral reef 
            
  TYPES OF REEF  - Deltaic reef , Ribbon reef . Lagoonal reef , Fringing reef and planar reefs 
              

                                




MARINE SPECIES -2900  REEFS home to an abundance and variety of marine species such as CORAL ,BONY FISHES , RAY , SEA SNAKES , SEA TURTLES, SHARKS  AND VARIOUS AQUATIC MAMMALS  many of the species found in the reef  are vulnerable or endangered


                                                                











 


NUMBER OF SPECIES -1500 species of fish , 6 species of turtles, 5000 species of mollusk ,9 species of seahorses and approx 215 species of birds , salt water crocodiles in the mangrove and salt marshes along the fringe of the national park .The  deeper waters have minke whales , humpback whale, dolphin and dugongs
