Wular lake (largest freshwater lake)

Wular Lake is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia. It is sited in Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The lake basin was formed as a result of tectonic activity and is fed by the Jhelum River. The lake's size varies seasonally from 30 to 189 square kilometres.

Wular Lake plays a significant role in the hydrographic system of the Kashmir Valley by acting as huge absorption basin for annual floodwater. The lake and its surrounding extensive marshes have an important natural wildlife.

Wular Lake is a sustainable wintering site for a number of migratory waterfowl species such as Little Egzet (Egretta garzetta), Cattle Egzet (Bubulcus ibis), Shoveler (Anas clypeata), Common Pochard (Aythya farina) and Mallard. Birds like Marbled Teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris) and Pallas´s Fish-eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) are species listened in the Red List of IUCN. Many terrestrial bird species observed around the lake are Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), Little Cuckoo (Piaya minuta), European Hoopoe (Upupa epops), Monal Pheasant (Lophophorus impejanus) and Himalayan Pied Woodpecker (Dendrocopos himalayensis albescens).

The Kashmir Flycatcher  Scientific name: Ficedula subrubra The Kashmir Flycatcher is a small passerine bird in the flycatcher family Muscicapidae . This is an insectivorous species which breeds in the north -west Himalayas in Kashmir valley and it is endemic to it . It is a migratory bird and migrates to the hills of central Sri Lanka and Western ghats of India in winters. The identified sites for Kashmir flycatcher in the valley are Dachigam National Park ,Overa Aru Wildlife Sanctuary and Shikargah area in Tral. Male Flycatcher has a grey brown back with an orange red throat ,breast and flanks ,bordered with black on the throat and breast.Female and First winter birds have slightly browner upperparts and the red of the underparts may be reduced to just a pinkish wash. Wetlands are transitional areas, sandwiched between permanently flooded deepwater  environments and well-drained uplands, where the water table is usually at or near the  surface or the land is covered by shallow water.
