 Introduction

Wetlands are areas where water covers the soils ,or is present either at or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season.

Wetlands may support both aquatic and terrestrial species.

GHARANA WETLAND

Ghar- ana wetland (meaning welcome home) is Paradise of migratory birds.

Gharana and its adjoining wetlands of Makwal, kukdian, Abdullian and Pargwal every year receive about 10000 to 20000 migratory birds in winter. All these wetlands are located along the border with Pakistan.

Location

Gharana wetland is located along the border in RS Pura Tehsil of Jammu District about 30kms from Jammu near Gharana village.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS

Migratory birds come from Siberia (Russia) which travel the distance of 2387 miles to Gharana "Wetland Reserve".

The reserve, known as bird-watchers'' paradise, supports a population of 20,000 to 25,000 birds of different species during every winter with most of the species being migratory.

These migratory birds cover more than 1000 miles distance in a single day. These birds migrate to Gharana for a hospitable habitat from freezing temperatures of Central Asia.

Plant species  ☘️

Gharana is partially covered with various water plants — water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes, Hydrilla spp. and Typha spp.

Hundreds of people from various parts of Jammu have been thronging the wetland to watch these birds and take pictures.

It is the only spot in Jammu to watch migratory birds of different species.

It has not only become a picnic spot but also live education centre for teaching them to love environment, protect and preserve it.
