A visit to Gharana wetland

  WETLANDS:- A wetland is a distinct ecosystem that is flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally. Flooding results in oxygen free processes prevailing, especially the soils.  Gharana Wetlands :-  Gharana wetlands known as birds watchers paradise in R. S. Pura, Jammu is home to thousands of migratory birds during winter season. Gharana wetlands located so close to Indo-Pak border in Jammu District has been notified as a protected waterbody and declared as an important bird area.  Location :- Gharana wetlands is located out 30 km from Jammu city extending to the Pakistan border in the West of Gharana village.  Wetland Wetlands are land transitions between the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems where the water table is usually at or near the surface or the land is covered by shallow water. Wetlands are considered among the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving home to wide range of plant and animal species. Gharana Wetland Gharana Wetland is located along the border in R.S Pura Tehsil of Jammu district about 35 kms from Jammu near Gharana village. Every year in winter season, a large number of migratory birds visit here from Siberia and Central Asia to withstand the harsh winters. Gharana wetland is declared as the "Conservation Reserve" by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. VISIT TO GHARANA WETLAND

  We the students of PG Zoology Semester 2nd from GCW Parade Jammu, got an opportunity to visit an educational tour at RS Pura on 4th Dec. 2021. We were altogether 24 students along with our teachers and HOD Mam. The title of our visit study was      "VISIT TO GHARANA WETLAND " STUDY AREA : Gharana Wetland (reserve) is located out 30 km from Jammu city extending to the Pakistan border in the West of Ghrana village. This wetland is 8 km from Ranbir Singh Pura town. This area is located in RS Pura tehsil, west to Jammu city. INFORMATION ABOUT THE AREA:             Gharana wetland (reserve) located close to Indo-Pak border in Jammu district is home to the thousands of migratory birds during winter season. This has been notified as a protected water water and declared 'Important Bird Area' (IBA). The state government has accorded sanction to notify Gharana Wetland (reserve) in the interest of Wildlife preservation and development in J&K....

Ghar-ana wetland (meaning welcome home) is paradise of migratory birds. Gharana and its adjoining wetlands of Makwal, Kukdian, Abdullian and Pargwal every year receive about 10000 to 20000 migratory birds in winter. All these wetlands are located along the border with Pakistan. Their existence is threatened because of several human and management factors.All these wetlands are Notified under J&K Wildlife Act and are recognized Important Birding sites by the BNHS but the total neglect of Government, the wildlife department and non cooperative attitude of local famers and administration has put these wetlands under serious threat. Gharana wetland is located along the border in RS Pura tehsil of Jammu district about 30 kms from Jammu near Gharana village. Earlier this spot alongwith other wetlands was the favourite hunting ground for Shikaris but thanks to the Wildlife Conservation Act that the hunting has stopped.
