🌿🌿GHARANA WETLAND🌿🌿

WETLAND : Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the soil all year or for varying periods of time during the year, including during the growing season.

Gharana wetland
Ghar-ana wetland (meaning welcome home) is paradise of migratory birds. Gharana and its adjoining wetlands of Makwal, Kukdian, Abdullian and Pargwal every year receive about 10000 to 20000 migratory birds in winter. All these wetlands are located along the border with Pakistan.

Location

Gharana wetland is located along the border in RS Pura tehsil of Jammu district about 30 kms from Jammu near Gharana village. Earlier this spot alongwith other wetlands was the favourite hunting ground for Shikaris but thanks to the Wildlife Conservation Act that the hunting has stopped. Abdullian wetland is located along the border in RS Pura Tehsil but over the years local farmers have encroached its area and have almost become extinct.

Plant species ☘️

Gharana is partially covered with various water plants — water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes, Hydrilla spp. and Typha species

Bird species🐧
Most of the birds like Grey Key Goose, shoverier, Marclands, Poachards, Teals and Gadwal come from different places in Central Asia and Northern Europe. They migrate to Gharana to escape the harsh winters.

Migratory birds come from Siberia (Russia) which travel the distance of 2387 miles to Gharana "Wetland Reserve". The reserve, known as bird-watchers'' paradise, supports a population of 20,000 to 25,000 birds of different species during every winter with most of the species being migratory.p

Threats to gharana wetland

Local people say that the ecosystem is facing an existential threat as its land is being encroached and reservoir is shrinking as it is getting filled with silt and waste.

Conservation
Wetland conservation is aimed at protecting and preserving areas where water exists at or near the Earth's surface, such as swamps ,marshes and bogs.Wetland  cover at least six per cent of the Earth and have become a focal issue for conservation due to the ecosystem service they provide.
