A visit to Gharana wetland
WETLANDS:-
A wetland is a distinct ecosystem that is flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally. Flooding results in oxygen free processes prevailing, especially the soils.
Gharana Wetlands :-
Gharana wetlands known as birds watchers paradise in R. S. Pura, Jammu is home to thousands of migratory birds during winter season. Gharana wetlands located so close to Indo-Pak border in Jammu District has been notified as a protected waterbody and declared as an important bird area.
Location :-
Gharana wetlands is located out 30 km from Jammu city extending to the Pakistan border in the West of Gharana village. This wetlands is 8 km from R.S.Pura town. This area is located in R. S. Pura Tehsil, west to Jammu city.
Main Attractions :-
The world's highest altitude migrants Bar-Headed Goose in the highlights at Gharana wetland. These migratory birds cover more than 1000 miles distance in a single day some other famous birds found in and around Gharana wetland reserve include cattle egret, black stock, Northern pintail, common teal, Nothern shoveler, Red wattled lapwing, rock pigeon etc.

1.water hyacinth
2.Eichhornia crassipes
3.Hyrilla spp.
4.Typha spp.

Threats to Gharana wetland:-
1. Military activities:-
Being located on the border, shelling by security people across the border is a constant problem
2. Invasive species :-
The wetland is infested with water hyacinth, Typha. Most pernicious invasive weeds of India and has destroyed many wetlands.
3. Poaching :-
Poaching through hunting has been banned here even then it was prevalent here till the last few years.
Other threats Includes :-
1. Basic facilities including road to wetland is in most dilapidated condition.
2. No arrangements for bird watchers due to which the only guest house constructed by wildlife department of state government gets crowded with tourists that threatens birds and their very existance .
